Gerry Porath was a Lutheran clergyman prior to meeting the missionaries and converting to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a minister, he was trained extensively in ancient Christian history at the largest consortium of theological seminaries in the world. He had access to, and carefully researched, records and manuscripts that detailed the Apostasy. Brother Porath gives us a greater insight into many events that would otherwise be unknown or overlooked. He has the ability to take dusty historical data and turn it into an exciting story.

His studies of the Apostasy motivated him to seek after and understand the Restored Gospel. He maintains that for us to gain a true appreciation of the Restored Church, we need to comprehend the Apostasy as foretold by Christ and the Apostles.

This three-talk set includes:

  • 35 A.D. to 350 A.D. - Death of Jesus Christ to the Council of Nicea - After the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, there was continual controversy over the meaning of his teachings. This led to increased persecution and disunity of the saints. This talk gives a view of Christianity in its infancy. It highlights personalities and events that brought growth to the church, and an early Apostasy-as was predicted by the Savior.
  • 325 A.D. to 1400 A.D. - The Council of Nicea, Fall of Rome, Beginning of Renaissance - In this second talk of the series, Christianity is traced through a period of turmoil, heresy, and darkness. Brother Porath takes us to the Council of Nicea where the doctrine of the Trinity was made dogma. He proceeds to the fall of Rome, its effect upon the church and through the Dark Ages. With the Renaissance, truths of the gospel begin to shine forth again.
  • 1450 A.D. to 1830 A.D. - Renaissance, Reformation, Counter-Reformation, Joseph Smith - This concluding talk in the series gives a detailed study of the beginnings of the major Protestant denominations and the doctrinal issues that caused men like Martin Luther and John Calvin to react so strongly. As more and more churches were established, false doctrines continued to creep in, but in the climate of the Reformation and with the cry for freedom in America, the Lord prepared the way for the Restoration.
