As a part of its 140th anniversary the Relief Soceity of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began a Legacy Lecture series in March 1982. Many women have been invited to share their talents and skills, illustrating the great contribution of the women of the Church. They subjects of the lectures represent choices they've made and the diligence and dedication they've shown toward achieving excellence. "Women today stand at an open door of opportunity in education," Elaine Shaw Sorensen begins her lecture. But what is "education"? In this enriching talk she defines what education means in today's world and what it can mean for Latter-day Saint women. She speaks of the important role women play in the teaching-learning process, of the educated women who have never entered universities, and of the inner motivation to become truly educated as being more significant than the learning activity itself.
