President Oaks’s two General Conference sermons on politics and the rule of law in October 2020 and April 2021 constitute a warning and a charge to Latter-day Saints. The warning is to beware the dangers of anger and hatred that lead to political division. The charge is to do all we can to defend the Constitution of the United States in particular and constitutional government, the rule of law, and successful political processes in general, so that we can heal the rifts in society and continue to have functioning governments. This charge will be fulfilled in great part by taking upon ourselves the obligation to “moderate and unify” (President Oaks’s words) with political opponents whenever contested issues threaten to drive us further apart. Hansen lays out a three-part approach for ordinary citizens to use when engaging in political rhetoric with friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens.
