Alyssa Edwards really hates going to the doctor. Her heart rate elevates, she forgets to breathe, and she passes out! Why does she have this deeply embedded anxiety about doctors? Maybe she’s trying to avoid the additional pain often associated with healing. Even as she deals with this conflict, she wonders what would happen if we didn’t let the fear of pain get in the way of our healing—physically, emotionally, spiritually? What if we just embraced the pain that is an inevitable part of the healing process? She says, “We are all dealing with something—whether it’s a physical disease, a mental disease, or self-deprecating thoughts—we all are sitting somewhere that needs to be made whole, and the only way that is going to work is through Jesus Christ.” Drawing on enlightening examples from the scriptures, as well as stories and experiences from her own life, Sister Edwards teaches that although the healing process can be difficult and painful, this time can become sacred and life changing. She says that pain can create our own Gethsemane, but because the Savior has already overcome that, He is able to perfectly succor us. And in the end, as we trust in His plan and His timing, we can be sure that everything is going to be okay!
