As a young Catholic girl growing up in Texas, Barbara Barrington Jones was always looking forward to the next phase in life where she would find happiness. As a gawky child she thought, “When I get to high school, I’ll be beautiful and popular.” Later she thought, “When I go to New York to study ballet, then I’ll be happy.” Then it was, “Life will be good if I can just get married.” While struggling in a marriage with a husband who was manic depressive she hoped that children would help her find happiness. But things went from bad to worse at home and twice her husband pointed a gun at her and threatened to kill her. On each of these occasions she offered a prayer in her heart, “Heavenly Father, are you there?” And each time she felt a peaceful assurance that indeed, He is there.
