The Salt Lake Temple has come to symbolize the faith and dedication of the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although the Saints have built many more temples since, the Salt Lake Temple is a singularly powerful reminder of the devotion of the early pioneers who sought refuge in the Salt Lake Valley many years ago. The Great Temple focuses on the feelings, reactions, and experiences of both members and non-members of the Church who visited or were involved in the events at the Temple Block during the forty-year effort that culminated in the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple on April 6, 1853. Drawing on diaries, letters, and newspaper articles written by these people, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel, author of Every Stone a Sermon, provides a multi-dimensional perspective on the temple construction and dedication and the people whose sacrifice and determination resulted in a glorious house of the Lord.
