This delightful story takes place in Utah Territory in 1888, among men and women dedicated to plural marriage and federal marshals equally dedicated to its suppression. To orient the reader, the authors outline this historical background in their Introduction. Some of the major incidents likewise are factual, but otherwise the book is fiction for pure enjoyment. Bishop Soberberg, succumbing to taunts about the appearance and innate abilities of his newly acquired horse, agrees to wager which requires him to ride the horse hundred miles to Salt Lake City in one day between sunup and sundown. Those wagering against him set up a succession of obstacles in his path-saddle burrs, a cut cinch-strap, a forest fire, and other ingenious deterrents. Now the race is really on! The odds seem heavily with the bad guys. But wait! Here comes Hyrum, the bishop's son. He seems to have a few ideas of his own. So does Ida Mae, and initially hers are mostly about how to ensnare Hyrum into a romantic trap. When the two of them combine to turn the tables on the bad guys the result is a merry chase which gets merrier by the minute. Aside from the interesting and authentic background of the book, the storyline is one to grip and hold the reader's interest. Every young person will readily relate to the self-conscious Hyrum on his first date, or to Ida Mae as, with feminine instinct and intent, she unwittingly increasesHyrum's already considerable terror of girls. And readers of all ages will feel themselves straining in the saddle with the rider as he flees from the deputies or as he urges his mount through the canyons in the desperate ride of the bishop's horse race.
