BYU Studies Journal Summaries
Volume 46, Number 1
In this issue, George S. Tate finds deeper meaning in D&C section 138 by placing it in its historical context—the First World War, the 1918 influenza pandemic, and Joseph F. Smith's personal loss. Poet Dixie Partridge is both a contributor and the subject of an interview. G. Wesley Johnson and Marian Ashby Johnson present research on the "Mormon outmigration"—the migration of young Latter-day Saints from the western U.S. Fred Woods provides context and analysis for a historical letter written by Agnes O’Neal from West Virginia to Brigham Young pleading to be remembered on the rolls of the Church.
Volume 46, Number 2
This is a special issue on Mormons and film. A major article by Randy Astle and Gideon Burton covers the history of Mormon interaction with film from 1905 to 2007, discussing portrayals of Mormons, their role in the industry, and institutional and independent films. James d’Arc examines Mormons as vampires in the film Trapped by the Mormons. Terryl Givens explores paradoxes in Mormon culture as reflected in film, such as the tension between searching and certainty. Sharon Swenson and Travis Anderson discuss the spiritual impact of film, arguing that art should not only avoid evil but also actively teach and inspire.
Volume 46, Number 3
This issue includes "A Survey of Dating and Marriage at BYU" by Bruce A. Chadwick and others, which provides data showing that BYU students' dating and marriage practices are unique compared to their counterparts at other American universities. Julie K. Allen and David L. Paulsen present the first English translation of Peter Christian Kierkegaard's polemical tract "About and Against Mormonism" (1855). An article by Max H Parkin examines the United Firm, a business established by Joseph Smith, and clarifies misunderstandings caused by pseudonyms used in Doctrine and Covenants section 104.
Volume 46, Number 4
This issue is devoted entirely to a comprehensive, color-coded chronology of Joseph Smith's life. It allows readers to track his activities week by week and year by year in his various roles as a prophet, family member, citizen, and leader. The chronology helps readers see his life as a single sequence, uncovering connections and interrelationships between events.
