Articles

While much has been written about the assassination of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, little attention has been paid to the crime scene at Carthage Jail. Authors Joseph Lyon and David Lyon examine eyewitness accounts, the jail's layout, physical evidence, and the types of weapons used and wounds inflicted.

The Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard and the Prophet Joseph Smith both critiqued 19th-century Christian culture. David Paulsen examines their views, showing them to be mutually reinforcing and illuminating.

Sherry Pack Baker introduces the Mormon Media History Timeline and explores the emerging discipline of Mormon media studies, arguing that the medium through which a message is relayed is as important as the message itself.

Fred Woods introduces the detailed journal entries and five photographs from Assistant Church Historian Andrew Jenson’s 1911 trip to Iceland. Jenson traveled to Iceland to give lectures, visit missionaries, and sightsee.

Steven Harper examines original manuscripts of Doctrine and Covenants 104 to clarify the connection between D&C 104:18 and Luke 16:23, a detail brought to light by the Joseph Smith Papers project.

Reviews

Among the many reviews, two focus on Terryl L. Givens's landmark book, People of Paradox: A History of Mormon Culture. Neal Kramer and Claudia Bushman both review the work, with Kramer noting that it fills a significant gap in the humanities within Mormon studies.

Two other reviews examine Mormonism in Dialogue with Contemporary Christian Theologies, edited by Donald W. Musser and David L. Paulsen. This is the first book of its kind to facilitate an academic theological dialogue between Mormon and other Christian scholars.
