Teacher. Administrator. Scholar. Husband. Father. Friend. Neighbor. Christian. Humanitarian. Lowell L. Bennion is all these and more. For some sixty years he has influenced the lives, thoughts, and actions of countless individuals through his writings, teachings, and service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his leadership and example in various community organizations. The Best of Lowell Bennion presents representative selections from his books, articles, lessons, and other writings. "Dr. Bennion has spoken in more essays and books, over a greater variety of subjects, than perhaps any other contemporary Mormon," writes Eugene England, who selected and edited the materials in the book. "His voice has spoken with a simplicity and clarity like water in a dry land, in favor of positive, integrated religion, in support of a unified philosophy of life, grounded in affirmative and universal principles. . . .

He is both a fine thinker about the great theoretical principles on which our practical, living religion is based and a fine practitioner of those principles." The opening chapter, "The Weightier Matters," captures the central theme of Dr. Bennion's message and the spirit of his contribution to twentieth-century Mormonism. This is followed by entries from the diary he kept while serving as a missionary in Germany in 1928-31, which provides unique insight into his private reflections.

The selections are arranged topically under eight section headings:

  • "Personal Witness"
  • "A Rational Theology"
  • "The Atonement of Christ"
  • "Practical Religion"
  • "Teaching and Leading"
  • "Learning How to Know"
  • "Learning How to Love"
  • "Learning How to Do"

The enrichment of life, the enhancement of life, growth in life, satisfying one's very basic nature: that's what I think life is all about," writes Dr. Bennion in his essay "The Things That Matter Most." These writings provide direction and incentive to help readers find enrichment, enhancement, growth, and satisfaction for their lives.
