It has been two thousand years since the Savior “spake . . . unto the multitude in parables” (Matthew 13:34), but for those with ears to hear, his parables reveal events of the latter days and expectations he holds for this dispensation and beyond. In Scriptural Parables for the Latter Days, authors Andrew C. Skinner and W. Jeffrey Marsh show that ancient parables contain much more than wise sayings and sound principles. Many parables bear witness of the Restoration, the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, the growth of the latter-day kingdom of God, and events related to the fulness of times. “This may be a new way of looking at parables,” they write, “but this is the hour and we are the people living at the time foretold long ago, the time when the prophetic parables taught by Jesus and his ancient prophets are being fulfilled.” In this enlightening book, the authors look closely at the Restoration parables of Matthew 13 and the Second Coming parables of Matthew 24 and 25. They also examine the allegory of the tame and wild olive trees in Jacob 5 and the metaphoric dream of King Nebuchadnezzar. In addition, they discuss the significance of latter-day parables given through the Prophet Joseph Smith regarding the establishment, redemption, and exaltation of Zion. Scriptural Parables for the Latter Days bears witness that this dispensation is at the center of long foreknown and foretold events. In doing so, it shows that prophetic parables can help us prepare to receive promptings from the Spirit and do what is necessary to prepare the earth for the Lord’s second coming. Andrew C. Skinner is dean of Religious Education and professor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University. He holds a master’s degree in theology from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Denver. Brother Skinner has served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a Scoutmaster, a bishop, and a member of the Church Materials Evaluation Committee. He and his wife, Janet Corbridge Skinner, are the parents of six children. W. Jeffrey Marsh is an associate professor of ancient scripture at BYU. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah and a master’s degree and a doctorate in educational leadership from BYU. Brother Marsh, a speaker at Education Week and the Know Your Religion series, taught seminary and institute classes in the Church Educational System for nineteen years. He and his wife, Kathie Paul Marsh, are the parents of six children.
