Messages of the First Presidency, Volume VI, compiled by DR. James R. Clark, covers the period 1935- 1951. It contains the official statements of the first Presidency, with accompanying explanatory historical notes, for the administrations of Heber J. Grant (last 10 \'bd years) and George Albert Smith as President of the Church. In 1935 the U.S. and the rest of the world were suffering from the repercussions of the Great Depression. To lighten its effects on Church members and to provide against future economic hardships, in 1936 the Church inaugurated the Church Security Program, later known as the Church Welfare Program. World War II began three years later, the U.S. becoming a combatant in 1941, and the Messages reflect First Presidency concern for the war-torn world in which Church members were fighting on both sides. Problems associated with world tensions engaged the Presidency's attention throughout the period, among them the program of compulsory military service and its impact on the missionary force. Other Messages in this period include the 1938 statement to Church educators on their calling and responsibility, a vial document as applicable now as when it was drawn up. As with the previous volumes in this series, here is a graphic picture of a dynamic Church whose leaders show a remarkable grasp of public affairs and an inspired response to the challenges of changing conditions.
