Archaeology has exploded many of the modern myths about ancient man. One of the great delusions has been that ancient peoples lived in deep ignorance and that their intelligence was only a little above the animal level. It is refreshing to learn now that many of the ancients were very bright people indeed, in some respects equal or superior to many of us who live today. Caveman stories and the pre-man tales are fast being swept under the rug where they belong as the "diggers for facts" ply their trade. Similar disrepute is likewise coming to the so-called scholarly claims that the Bible is but a collection of legends to be taken only lightly, if at all. Archaeology is reversing much of this. Already it has blown away much conjecture and supposition and now has unveiled data about the ancient past that help us to turn from fancy to fact and from uncertainty to definite history.
