Taken from the 1950 edition of Teachings of the Book of Mormon by William E. Berrett: Although the Book of Mormon has been in the Church for more than a century and has been used repeatedly as a course of study, many of its finest teachings have been neglected and have remained unappreciated by the majority of the members. This has been true chiefly because in most courses of study on the book the greater part of the time has been devoted to the historical matter pertaining to the translation of the records, the general story of the Nephite and Jaredite civilizations, and evidences of the divine nature of the account. This type of treatment has generally left little class time for a detailed study of the Book of Mormon's contributions to specific phases of religious philosophy. This course of study is designed to strike directly at the problems of religion and life upon which the Book of Mormon has contributions. It is presumed that the student has already read the Book of Mormon in its entirety and is acquainted with its story, and in a measure with its prophets. Hence Book of Mormon material on a given problem is gathered from wherever it may be found in the volume. All material is considered as reliable and no attempt is made to weigh one passage as against another. The course of study has three major objectives-to lead the student intelligently into the real message of the Book of Mormon; to point the way to an application of the lasting values to present-day life; and above all to acquaint the student with the place and work of Jesus Christ in relation to the whole human race. Because readers are generally loath to follow a text which requires them to flit constantly from text to Book of Mormon and back again, most of the passages referred to from the Book of Mormon are copied into the text itself. It is hoped thereby to encourage reading on the part of class members and also assist them in quoting passages from the Book of Mormon during discussions so that such discussions will not deteriorate into useless wanderings among private opinions. This study is not designed to be all comprehensive. There are many fine values left untouched, but some must of necessity be omitted from so brief a course, and if the teachings selected do not always appear to the reader to be the choicest, they are at least among the obvious values of the book and are eminently worthy of study.
