From one of the bestselling historical fiction authors in the LDS literary world comes Hearts of the Children, available now for the first time in paperback. In this series, which picks up the next generation of characters from the beloved Children of the Promise books, Dean Hughes tells the gripping story of four young cousins Gene, Kathy, Diane, and Hans who experience a time of turmoil and trial, of growth and discovery as they find their own paths in life. If you re interested in the lessons of history, or simply looking for powerful LDS fiction, you ll love these books. They portray the explosive problems of the sixties and early seventies in stunning detail, but also offer the hope that families can hold together and that good people, with the Lord s help, can not only survive but prosper.

Gene was a sound sleeper. Not much woke him once he was out. Elder Russon probably would have made it out the door had he not bumped a chair with his suitcase. The chair scraped across the floor, and Gene was suddenly sitting straight up, confused about what was happening. He saw the shadow, near the door, and even in the dark knew that Elder Russon had his clothes on. “What's going on?” he said.

“Nothing. I'll see you.”

The door was coming open, and Gene responded instantly. He threw back his feather tick, jumped up, grabbed for Russon. He caught a handful of suit coat, then an arm, and he pulled. Russon spun, fought to yank his arm away, but he still had the suitcase in one hand. Geen drove foward suddenly, clamped both arms around Russon, jerked him away from the door. But the suitcase clattered across the floor and the elders stumbled in the dark and fell. They thudded onto the floor, both on their shoulders. Russon was still twisting, trying to roll away. "You can't make me stay,” he said. “I can leave if I want to.”

“No. No, you can't. Not like this.”

This isn't the way his mission was supposed to go. But Elder Gene Thomas has a lot to learn – about himself and about life. So do Kathy and Diane, both away from home for college, and Hans, whose attempt to help his friend escape East Germany has tragic consequences. Troubled Waters continues the gripping story of life in sixties for the Thomas grandchildren, a time of growth and self-discovery, of facing tough decisions and figuring out how to get along in a rapidly changing world. This second volume of the Hearts of the Children series will go straight to your heart!
